Aquatics Classes
Aqua Arthritis
This 45 minute class takes place in our warm water therapy pool, which allows for flexibility and mobility of the joints. Arthritis Foundation certified instructors will lead you through a series of exercises that can help relieve the pain and stiffness caused by arthritis.
Soothing Joints
This class is for individuals who want to improve muscular strength and endurance, while reducing the incidence of injury. If you are currently living a more active lifestyle, but with joint limitations or replacements, then register for this class. Classes held in the warm water therapy pool.
Youth Group Swim Lessons
Learn To Swim Program
The next session starts January 8 and runs through April 7.
No online or phone registration is accepted. You must register in person at the Buffalo Grove Fitness Center.
The Buffalo Grove Fitness Center follows the guidelines set by the American Red Cross. Please enroll your child in the appropriate class according to their skill level. Take into account any absence from structured swimming when choosing a level. Parents are to remain on the premises and in designated parent viewing area during the 30 minute lessons. One make-up lesson may be allowed on the scheduled "Make-Up Lesson Day" (TBA each session). You must contact the Aquatics Coordinator at (847) 353-7517 to reserve a spot.
Students must successfully demonstrate all skills before moving to the next level.
Parent/Tot
Give your child a chance to become comfortable and begin to learn aquatic skills. This class is for both parent and the 6 - 36 month old child. Class is held in the warm water therapy pool.
Level 1
Skills to accomplish include enter and exit pool independently from the side, bobbing, submerging face and blow bubbles for 3 seconds, front/back float with support from instructor, alternating arm action, supported kicking, rollovers with support, jumping in from side and open eyes underwater to retrieve a submerged object. Class is held in the warm water therapy pool.
Level 2
Skills to accomplish include holding breath and submerging entire head for 5 seconds, retrieving underwater objects, unsupported front/back glide and float, unsupported flutter kicks on front/back, elementary backstroke arms, unsupported rollovers, level body from vertical to horizontal position, front/back crawl 15 feet, rhythmic breathing, finning on back, front/back glide two body lengths and tread water. Class is held in the warm water therapy pool.
Level 3
Skills to accomplish include front crawl with rhythmic breathing 15 yards, back crawl 15 yards, butterfly kick 15 feet, elementary backstroke 10 yards, reverse direction while swimming, treading water and breaststroke. Class is held in the lap pool.
Level 4
Skills to accomplish include front crawl with rhythmic breathing 25 yards, back crawl 25 yards, breaststroke 25 yards, sidestroke 15 yards, butterfly 15 yards, elementary backstroke 25 yards, breaststroke kick 25 yards, sidestroke kick 15 yards, change of direction at wall, and treading water. Class is held in the lap pool.
Level 4 Graduates
This is a 45 minute class for those students looking to continue developing their swimming skills, prepare for an organized team, or get a great workout.
Competitive Prep Class
This class is meant to improve stroke technique, build endurance, increase speed, learn competitive rules and flip turns. Students must be able to swim 200 yards continuously and have coordinator approval.
Additional Swimming Lessons
Private Swim Lessons
Private swim lessons are designed to meet your specific needs. Learn the basics of swimming or fine tune your technique. Please complete an information sheet and call the Aquatics Coordinator at (847) 353-7517 to schedule your lesson(s). Lessons are provided in half-hour increments. There is a 24 hour cancellation policy. Lessons can be made up of individual, semi-private (2 people) and small group (3 or 4 people). Single, packages of 5 and packages of 10 lessons may be purchased.
Adult Learn To Swim
This adult small group class will help you feel comfortable in and around the water, as well as introduce you to stroke development and coordination. Come join us, it's never too late to learn! These classes are taught by certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. Class is held in the lap pool.
Master Swim
This 1-hour class held once a week for 8 weeks is designed for adults over the age of 18 with a good swimming base level. You must be able to swim freestyle for 1,000 yards. For more information contact the Programs Manager (847) 353-7582.
